چکیده

Bacteria and allied micro-organisms are of direct economic concern to man in many ways besides causing diseases and bringing about the decomposi tion of marine a,nimals and commercial algae . There are many p roblems in the general economy of the ocean , the solu tio n of which requi res the a id of the microbio log ist. The m ic ro-organisms belong to a wide range of groups and include bacteria, blue-green algae (Cyanophyceae), ai atoms (B acillariaceae) and possibly yeasts (Ascomycetes) and protozoa and early stages of brown seaweeds (Phaeophyta). Whe n micro-organisms from these groups are present , the y ar e often found as discrete colonies of a single species. If we consider the fac t that 72 0 0 of earth 's surface is covered with mostly salt w ater and that mic r o-organisms populate the surface reg ions as well as the bottom sediments , we can visualise the sea as the largest nat ura l environ men t inhabited by microbes .

The interaction of marine fouling organisms with topography of varied scale and geometry: a review.

Many studies have examined the effects of surface topography on the settlement behaviour of marine organisms and this article reviews these investigations with more emphasis on the effects of topography scale. It has been observed that macro topographies (1-100 mm) are generally favoured by marine fouling taxa and are unsuitable for antifouling applications. This is because macro topographies a...

Microbial degradation of dimethylsulphide and related C1-sulphur compounds: organisms and pathways controlling fluxes of sulphur in the biosphere.

Dimethylsulphide (DMS) plays a major role in the global sulphur cycle. It has important implications for atmospheric chemistry, climate regulation, and sulphur transport from the marine to the atmospheric and terrestrial environments. In addition, DMS acts as an info-chemical for a wide range of organisms ranging from micro-organisms to mammals. Micro-organisms that cycle DMS are widely distrib...

Chronic and acute effects of nickel and cobalt on chlorophyll a and carotenoids of marine micro algae Nannochloropsis oculata

Algae are among the aquatic organisms that are severely exposed to increasing levels of pollutants, which are becoming a concern in marine ecosystems. Heavy metals are among the compounds for which their increase in high levels causes problems in the structure of algae communities in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, the effect of different concentrations of Nickel (1.5, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 15 mg/...

Exploring Potentials of Marine Microbiology and Biotechnology in Developing Countries

Ocean occupies 70 % of the earth’s land mass. Forty percent of the world inhabitants are living along the coastline of the oceans. Marine ecosystems provide more potential biodiversity for novel products and services than any other ecosystem in the world. Marine lives ranging from bacteria to higher forms of lives are sources of micro and macro molecules required for advancement of biotechnolog...
